Do you remember (that part better be sang in the tune of September by Earth Wind and Fire) the video watched where the guy was asking the spirits for advice and financial help? Well this is kinda like that but OLD. In ancient China there was still a heavy weight placed on one’s relationship with their deceased ancestors, and the emperor at the given time would communicate with his ancestors by cooking the bones and seeing how they’d crack afterwards. Upon seeing the cracks they’d interpret what their ancestors were saying. They would also offer sacrifices as a way of bribing them.
In ancient China there was a belief that you had to keep the spirits of your deceased ancestors pleased and seek counsel from them, or they would become frustrated at you and there would be consequences such as (but not limited to) illness, financial instability, and death. The way to communicate with the spirits was by drilling holes in oracle bones, and then cooking them. After that they would read the cracks on the bones and interpret the cracks as a response from their ancestors.
